Biotechnology is technology based on biology, agriculture, food science, and medicine. Modern use of the term usually refers to genetic engineering as well.

Biotechnology draws on the pure biological sciences (genetics, microbiology, etc) and in many instances is also dependent on knowledge and methods from outside the sphere of biology (chemical engineering, information technology, biorobotics, etc).

Biotech Websites brings informative biotech articles, educational biotech videos, and lively chatter and conversation about the world of biotechnology.

By Lance Winslow Biopharma is an industry dependent on investment, and thus, has been importantly affected by this financial crisis. Not only are manufacturers and biotech companies being impacted, but also, vendors and service suppliers.

As of today, new technologies and product ideas have taken a second place over stock market projections. Serious lay-offs, mergers, and outsourcing opportunities are the current norm. Outsourcing has expanded beyond manufacturing and R&D, moving also into sales. This has a positive effect over short-term results, but sacrifices long-term investor equity.

In view of this spectrum, there are several important trends taking force within the global biotech reality, as identified by life sciences consulting firms; these are the promised sun after the storm.

1. Product approvals

Biopharma product approvals have been decreasing for almost five years now, especially for recombinant proteins and monoclonal antibodies; however, the next five years seem promising. Fewer products have been approved yearly lately, but these include more of these proteins, which have higher peak sales levels, and, although fewer of these antibodies have been approved in recent years, there are many filings pending, promising an increase in approvals over the next years. In addition, biosimilars are a long-term promising trend being adopted by the European Union and seeking FDA approval.

2. Mergers and acquisitions

Big and small are being hurt by the current events, and many will eventually be acquired; others will sell assets or restructure. Private funding for small biopharmas will get structured in order to create a lasting effect on the industry. The big ones will get the rights to market the smaller ones’ products.

3. Emerging markets

Although China’s manufacturing indexes have decreased considerably, this country still presents a positive annual growth rate, some of it pertaining to the pharma industry, as several collaborations, investments in China’s biotech, and joint ventures between domestic Chinese organizations and western companies. In addition, it is working on making health care more accessible to its huge population; domestic biological consumption is increasing as they improve their R&D and process development of biologicals. It is home to more than 500 biopharma companies. Its biogeneric makers are going to explore opportunities in developing countries, and exports of bio regents will increase, as they have been exporting them for many years now.

India’s biopharma continues to grow even today. Its R&D, clinical research, and production capacity have expanded to support the industry’s growth. The Department of Biotechnology will acquire a full ministry status, off shoring is increasing, and clinical research is growing, among other positive projections.

4. Science

Biopharma is turning strong towards the use of novel expression systems. There are regulatory and intellectual property issues, but manufacturers are willing to work it out.

5. Biofuels

This is a major biotech trend, as it has proven to be more economical than wind, solar, and hydro options. There are many options here that are being explored, and there are high hopes for this area, even if the crisis has slowed down the commercialization of ethanol from non-food crop sources.

6. Manufacturing

Bioreactors are diminishing in size in the next years, as the need for more capacity is decreasing.

The increased use of disposables in biopharma manufacturing is a certainty due to rapid changeover times, faster cleaning, and lower risk of contamination. In this way, reduced capital is manageable, and cleaning costs are diminished.

7. Downstream purification

It is a more cost-effective and efficient purification system, although not free of issues in regards to capacity.

8. Outsourcing

Pharma has chosen to outsource several activities in order to focus on others. This trend will only get stronger in the future as a result of the current stage the industry is at; allowing for lower costs and more efficiency.

9. Budget

In the future, executives will be changing budgets and buying patterns. Budgets will be spent more carefully, impacting mainly, positively, or negatively: process development, new technologies to improve efficiency for downstream production, equipment purchases, and construction of facilities.

By Adnan Masood Are you a degree holder in science? If so, are you looking for a job? While you have many job search tools right at your fingertips, most job seekers overlook Craigslist. Don’t make the same mistake. Craigslist is a popular classified website. Although most commonly associated with for sale products, they do have a job sections. You can use the classified service to find jobs in the biotech and science industry. How?

To start your biotech and science job search, visit the website at Craigslist.org. Once on the main page, select your state and city. This may be Florida and Miami. If you want to browse, look for the jobs section. If you want to search, turn to the search box on the left-hand side of the page. Change the defaults search settings from “for sale,” to “jobs.” Then, use related keyword phrases to search. Good examples include biotech, science, lab, lab technician, analyst, and so forth.

In addition to browsing or searching Craigslist for biotech and science jobs, you can also post your resume on the website. This is ideal as many employers and hiring manager like to browse for qualified candidates, instead of having to weed through hundreds of applications to find them. The best way to post your resume on Craigslist is to copy and paste it from Microsoft Word or another similar program. Copying and pasting may mess up your resume format, so verify and make any necessary format changes before posting. It is also important to write your headline carefully. All resumes are posted in the same place, so make sure employers know what your specialty is. Your heading should be something like “Lab Technician with 5 Year Experience and Degree Looking for a Steady Job.”

As mentioned above, you can search for science and biotech jobs by visiting your local city page, like Miami. This is a good start, but you are limited. Craigslist prohibits multiple city searches. If you are looking to relocate for the right job, but don’t know where to yet, you could spend days viewing and searching all city pages. Instead, download the free Craigslist Reader at MotionT.com. You can search for just science jobs in Miami, all of Florida, or nationwide. Not only that, but you can also signup for new job notifications; be the first to hear about new jobs posted on Craigslist.org. Get your resume submitted before others have a chance to hear about the job!

Download the Craigslist Reader to search science jobs posted on Craigslist. Visit Motion Technologies, your one-stop resource for free searchable software for classified websites, including Craigslist.

By Lance Winslow Should scientists be allowed to play around with the human genome? Should we be screwing around with our own DNA? Is it right to experiment with stem cells? Should we allow robotic parts, computer human interfaces and artificial hearts, lungs and kidneys? What will the future bring and will it be an ethical future or will we cause irreversible evolution and forget what it is to be human?

Presently we see that the BioTech industry is attempting to use that which we already have to make us better. It is competing against the robotic field of medical implants. Which is better for humanity? Should we allow either, both or only one in our future, as many believe that the entire future of the species is at stake? That is to say what it is to be human in the first place you see?

Well in this argument we see real needs for instance as there are injured and maimed Soldiers coming back who are fighting the murderers and International Terrorists and they are happy to get artificial parts to enjoy their life without too much hardship. I myself have a steel rod in my Femur Bone from a motorcycle accident. Most would agree that there is nothing wrong with that right?

Yet where do we draw the line? Do we say no artificial brains, hearts or reproductive organs? Yet what about pieces of them to help the function when they are damaged or what if they are not damaged but one wants an enhancement? Think of implants people get to better their appearance are those really wrong if it helps someone feel better about themselves? Some say it is others argue it is choice. So when do you perceive that it will be wrong? Where would one draw that line? What is humanity anyway? There is no good definition. Will humans become our own Gods, re-designing ourselves? If not then should we continue? And if so, then when will we become God and once we do, will we still be human? Think on this.

Imagine spinning goat milk into spider silk five times stronger than steel! Scientists have found a way to put a whole new spin on genetic research. It’s called biomimicry. Scientists are now able to mimic a spider’s web by breeding goats with spider genes in their mammary cells. The goat’s milk contains a protein that can be spun and stretched into a fine silk fit to cover Spiderman — the spidergoat is here. All 50 Secrets of the Sequence videos have an accompanying classroom-tested lesson …

biotech
